This bas-relief painting explores the notion of phasing, of energetic, sonic and mathematical drift, where waves that interact can amplify constructively or destructively. Composer Steve Reich experimented with sound phasing by taking a single tone and setting it to dephase to the point where it would eventually morph into another one. With this work, I am experimenting with steel mesh oriented at a certain angle in space to interfere with light in order to create a shadow that becomes integral to the experience of the piece. I am interested here in how matter in consort with light will produce a third entity - a shadow - which may possibly drift over time to generate something else.
